After Travis had found an underground garage that cost more to park in for a couple of hours than an entire month of Emma’s rent, the four of them went to the top of the Rockefeller Center. They walked around the upper promenade, taking in all the glorious sights New York City had to offer: among them the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center.

Emma pulled in big lungfuls of fresh air, glad to be out of the car and the madness of the city. Nightshade’s idea to come here had been an excellent one. She felt far away from family politics and murders. They seemed distant now, which was a good thing.

Nightshade stopped at the corner of the building and gazed out at Central Park, the clumps of green surrounded by grey. “We only have a couple of days before the Volinari deadline, so let’s recap.” She faced Emma. “What do we know so far?”

Emma groaned as reality came back with a heavy bump. Can’t we have five minutes not talking about it?

Mac remained separate, vigilant, as if expecting someone to leap out and shoot Emma at any moment.

“Landon killed Francesco and John,” Travis said.

Nightshade nodded. “But Landon set the bomb in that wall years ago. Why he planned so far ahead remains a mystery.”

“An argument between Francesco and Landon during that Syndicate meeting at the hotel tipped him over the edge,” Emma said.

Travis’s brow furrowed. “They didn’t argue.”

Emma and Nightshade turned to him.

“What did you say?” Nightshade asked.

“On the day of the explosion, Francesco and Landon didn’t have an argument,” Travis said. “It was between Landon and Giovanni.”

Emma gawped at him. “Giovanni lied?”

“That day you investigated the sixth floor, I waited in the garage,” Travis said. “A couple of the security guys there told me what happened.”

Nightshade took a step toward him.

“The Syndicate meeting hadn’t been going long when Giovanni asked a guard to fetch Evan,” Travis continued. “When they arrived, they overheard the argument between Landon and Giovanni.”

“What was it about?” Emma asked.

“Giovanni had used another trucking company to move a shipment. Landon said it wasn’t the first time it had happened, and that Giovanni had broken Syndicate rules by stepping on his toes.”

Nightshade ran a gloved hand through her tousled hair and raised an eyebrow at Emma. “That changes things a bit.”

“How?” Emma said. “Landon’s still a killer.”

Nightshade stared out over New York City. “But he blew up Francesco, not Giovanni.” Her expression glazed over for a few seconds, then she returned her attention to Emma. “Either Landon intended to kill Giovanni but got his father instead, or Landon murdered Francesco as a way to hurt Giovanni.”

“What about John?” Travis asked. “Why didn’t Landon plant the bomb in the Syndicate room and take them all out at once?”

Nightshade shrugged.

“Was it a mistake, then?” Emma asked. “We can assume Landon was in his car and leaving the hotel when he called the device and activated it. He had no way of knowing who was in the bathroom.
